Gold prices hit a new record high, surpassing the $5,000 per ounce mark on Monday, driven by strong investor demand for safe-haven assets amid escalating geopolitical tensions and instability in global markets.

Spot gold rose 1.98% to $5,081.18 an ounce by 03:23 GMT, after hitting a record high of $5,092.71 earlier in the session. US gold futures for February delivery also climbed 2.01% to $5,079.30 an ounce.

Gold recorded its first historic breakthrough of the $5,000 per ounce level, after achieving a rise of 64% during 2025, supported by the demand for safe havens, the easing of US monetary policy, intensive purchases by central banks, in addition to strong inflows into exchange-traded funds, while gold prices have risen by more than 17% since the beginning of 2026.

In the other metals market, silver rose 5.79% to $108.91 an ounce, after hitting a record high of $109.44, platinum climbed 3.77% to $2,871.40 an ounce after touching a record high of $2,891.6, and palladium rose 3.2% to $2,075.30 an ounce, its highest level in more than three years.

Silver also surpassed the $100 per ounce level for the first time last Friday, following strong gains of 147% during 2025, driven by retail investor interest and rising demand in physical markets.
