A senior Iranian official suggested on Thursday that his country and the United States could reach a framework agreement between the two sides if Washington “seriously” separates nuclear and non-nuclear issues .
The official, in remarks carried by US media, said that the talks between Iran and the US in Geneva raised new ideas that require consultation with Tehran, noting that some gaps “still exist “.
The Iranian official also noted that the talks were “intense and serious “.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry announced that “intensive negotiations were held for nearly 3 hours in the presence of the Omani Foreign Minister and the Director of the Atomic Energy Agency .”
She added that the negotiations “will resume in Geneva this evening,” noting that “the American and Iranian negotiating teams presented their views seriously .”
The Iranian Foreign Ministry pointed out that there are contradictory statements from some American officials, which raises doubts about their seriousness .
She stressed that “our positions are firm, today’s talks are serious, and we hope they will continue this evening regarding the nuclear issue and the lifting of sanctions .”
The Iranian news agency ISNA reported earlier on Thursday that indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States had been temporarily suspended for consultations and were to resume in the evening .
The third round of indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States has begun in Geneva, mediated by the Sultanate of Oman, amid indications that the talks will continue and that a fourth round is possible .
Iranian television quoted a source close to the negotiating team as saying, “There is a possibility that a fourth round will be held after the American and Iranian sides entered into detailed issues within the proposals conveyed by the Iranian side during the current round in Geneva .”
He added: “Negotiations are continuing in a cautious atmosphere, but a fourth round is expected, and this is not out of the question if progress is made during the ongoing consultations .”
For his part, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei told Iranian television that the subject of the negotiations is focused on the nuclear file, noting that Tehran had clearly conveyed, through the Omani mediator, its positions regarding lifting the sanctions and Iran’s rights and interests in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, with the details to be discussed in indirect contacts with the American side .
The Omani Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi held a meeting in Geneva with US envoy Steve Wittkopf and Jared Kushner, during which Iranian views and proposals were reviewed, in addition to the responses and questions of the US team regarding the basic elements of the Iranian nuclear program and the guarantees required to reach an agreement that includes technical and monitoring aspects .
Muscat affirmed that efforts are continuing “seriously and constructively,” with unprecedented openness from the negotiators to innovative ideas and solutions, in preparation for reaching a fair agreement with sustainable guarantees .
As Axios revealed, the negotiations included a direct meeting between Kushner and Wojtkov with the Iranian negotiating delegation in Geneva .
As the Wall Street Journal pointed out, “America proposed that the easing of sanctions be limited at the beginning, and also proposed that Washington take possession of all of Iran’s enriched uranium, and that Iran destroy its three nuclear sites .”
