Media outlets reported on Sunday that bettors on the American betting platform “Polymarket” lost tens of millions of dollars after predicting that the United States would launch military strikes against Iran.
Over the past few months, the market has seen millions of dollars in bets placed on the timeline of potential US attacks on Iran, which US President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened before hinting at the possibility of dealing with Tehran through diplomatic means.
But the dates on which the bettors expected the strikes to take place passed without Trump carrying out his threat, causing them to lose, according to press reports.
Millions more have been bet on the possibility of overthrowing Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Polymarket is one of the world’s largest betting platforms, where users can pay with cryptocurrencies, debit or credit cards, and bank transfers.
But the platform has recently faced accusations of manipulation, coinciding with the US military operation in Venezuela that resulted in the arrest of its president, Nicolas Maduro.
