From the home of the decisive leader... Sunni forces decide on the selection of the new Speaker of ParliamentShafaq News – Baghdad
The “Al-Azm” alliance, led by Muthanna al-Samarrai, revealed that a crucial meeting of Sunni political forces will be held this Sunday evening at the home of Thabit al-Abbasi, leader of the “Al-Hasm” alliance, to choose the Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament.

Coalition member Salah al-Dulaimi told Shafaq News Agency that “the formation of the National Political Council is a good step in bringing Sunni Arabs together again after a state of fragmentation that lasted for more than eight years,” noting that “the return of Sunni Arabs to form under a comprehensive political framework is a step in the right direction towards activating the principle of partnership instead of being satisfied with the principle of participation that lasted for more than two decades after the change.”

He explained that “the political council was formed on the basis of consensus within the component for all the leaders of the Sunni blocs that won the elections, and that this consensus is moving towards presenting a consensus figure to be presented to the national arena, or two figures from the council’s first-line leaders.”

Al-Dulaimi suggested that “Muthanna al-Samarrai will be one of its key figures, while the second figure will be the head of the Progress Alliance, Muhammad al-Halbousi, or he will present an alternative to him from the alliance.”

He added that “Sunday’s meeting at Thabet Al-Abbasi’s house will be a decisive meeting in this regard in order to go to the parliament session on the 29th of this month in a clear manner,” stressing that “we in the Al-Azm Alliance accept the outcomes of the first parliament session in its legal form, away from political pressures or the attempt by some to introduce political money as a substitute for the existing political consensus among the partners of the nation.”

He continued, “We consider Muthanna al-Samarrai to be the most capable of managing the next phase, given his ability to forge alliances and his national acceptance, and his avoidance of the politics of creating crises and populist or divide-and-rule rhetoric.” He emphasized that “he is capable of restoring the parliament to its proper place and effectiveness, and activating its oversight and legislative role, as the parliament has been transformed in the past period into a political and legislative platform.”

He concluded by saying that “the presence of Muthanna al-Samarrai in the presidency of Parliament will be a factor of strength, consolidation, and commitment within the National Political Council, not the opposite, and will move forward with the national judiciary to build real partnerships, not react to crises, and transform the Sunni component into a real partner within the political system in the country.”

Yesterday, the head of the Supreme Judicial Council, Faiq Zaidan, confirmed that the first session of the new House of Representatives, scheduled for December 29, 2025, must decide on the appointment of the Speaker of the Council and his two deputies, and it is not permissible constitutionally or legally to postpone or extend it.

The National Political Council, which includes the Sunni forces that won the elections, is witnessing rapid political activity to announce the nomination of a candidate for Speaker of Parliament, through meetings described as positive that discussed the files of the Parliament’s presidency and the rights of the Sunni component.

This comes in parallel with the moves of the Shiite Coordination Framework, which affirmed its commitment to the constitutional deadlines and to resolving the nomination of the Prime Minister within two weeks.
