Former MP Mohamed Ibrahim criticized, on Wednesday, the weakness of anti-corruption measures in state departments, most importantly the Tax Authority, which made investors afraid to review it.
Ibrahim said in an interview with Al-Maalouma Agency, “Iraq is at a crossroads regarding the issue of corruption and combating it, as the authorities do not resort to effective preventive measures to prevent corruption and bribery in important departments such as taxes.”
He added, “There must be attention to the tax sector as it is the most important resource after oil,” noting that “the investor has become afraid to review the tax departments, and the problem will continue unless it is addressed from the ground up, as automation must be adopted in all financial details related to taxes to prevent corruption.”
The former MP warned that “leaving a single tax component without automation will open the door to corruption and extortion,” calling for “reliance on reputable companies to implement automation projects.”
Earlier, sources reported pressure, mediation and bribes were being offered to close the audio leaks case attributed to the head of the Tax Authority, Ali Waad Allawi, in which he talks about tampering with tax funds.
