The former member of the Parliamentary Oil and Energy Committee, Ghaleb Muhammad Ali, confirmed that the region owes Baghdad $37 billion for oil exports, pointing to the importance of enacting the oil and gas law in order to solve part of the problem between Baghdad and Erbil.

Ali told Al-Maalouma that “more than one billion and 600 million barrels of oil have left the region, but the Kurdish citizen did not get anything from it, and Kurdistan still owes more than 37 billion dollars to the federal government.”

He added, “The oil and gas law is very important, and efforts must be combined to pass it in order for the Iraqi citizen to benefit from it, from Basra to Zakho, in order to solve part of the problem of the oil file.”

The former member of Parliament explained, “The federal government has the authority to send oil derivatives to the Kurdistan region by 12.6 percent, as it is under the control of the central government, based on the decision of the Federal Court, which granted Baghdad the authority to control the oil file throughout Iraq.”
