A report by Foreign Policy magazine confirmed on Tuesday that reports indicate that Baghdad and Washington have agreed to end Operation Inherent Resolve, and the remaining 2,500 US troops in Iraq will withdraw in two phases over the next two years.
The report, translated by /Al-Maalomah/ agency, stated that “For the fourth time in many decades, the United States is preparing to leave Iraq, in line with the changing scope and objectives of the final mission. As usual, the Pentagon is hedging its bets. Sabrina Singh, the Pentagon’s deputy press secretary, recently told reporters: “The United States is not withdrawing from Iraq. “Our footprint in the country will change,”
he added. “The human and financial costs of a continued U.S. military presence in Iraq outweigh the benefits, so a shift toward diplomacy, intelligence sharing, and empowering local forces would reduce U.S. vulnerabilities while fostering a more durable relationship.”
He continued, “Sustained military presence exacerbates anti-American sentiment and provides adversaries with a convenient target. As the war between Israel and the axis of resistance expands, the threat to U.S. forces increases, and these forces are left as bait in a trap of our own making. Policymakers must stop procrastinating and reorient U.S. foreign policy in this context.”
The report noted that “withdrawal provides an opportunity for lawmakers to address outdated policies and ensure that future military operations are subject to appropriate oversight. Finally, a successful repeal effort would force Congress to address the U.S. record in Iraq and close this complex chapter in American history once and for all.”
