Shafaq News/ The Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources in the Kurdistan Region, Bekard Talabani, said on Wednesday that the region is an “important” area in the field of agriculture, and is considered a food basket for all of Iraq, stressing that the region, due to its geographical nature, has become a source of providing surface water to the rest of the country.
This came in a speech she delivered during the activities of the second day of the Economic Forum between Italy and the Kurdistan Region, which was held today at the headquarters of the General Confederation of Italian Industry.
Talabani said in her speech that the Kurdistan Region has fertile land for agriculture and is included among the food baskets in the region.
She added that the Kurdistan Regional Government has taken serious steps within the vision of achieving food security and providing water and food to the Kurdistan Region and the rest of Iraq, stressing that climate change has had an impact on the countries of the region, including Iraq.
Talabani also pointed out that the region is located in the northern part of Iraq and is a safe and stable area, and at the same time has a set of characteristics that distinguish it from the central and southern regions of Iraq.
She went on to say that the Kurdistan Region has seven million acres of arable land and about three million forest trees.
Talabani continued, “We have five main branches for water resources,” noting that the process of producing vegetables and fruits is going well in the Kurdistan Region, and the annual production volume is 250-300 thousand tons of fruits.
