Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa affirmed on Tuesday that lifting the sanctions imposed on his country constitutes a fundamental step to give Syria the opportunity to recover from decades of war, noting that the US administration under President Donald Trump is showing clear support for Syria’s stability and territorial integrity.
Al-Sharaa said in an interview with the American newspaper The Washington Post, following his meeting with President Trump at the White House, which was followed by Shafaq News Agency, that “through Mr. Trump’s policies, it is clear that he supports the stability of Syria, its territorial unity, and the complete lifting of sanctions on it, and therefore he is pushing in this direction.”
He explained that “the majority of members of Congress I met also support lifting the sanctions,” adding that “the US administration agrees that Syria deserves to have the opportunity to be stable, to build its economy and maintain its territorial integrity.”
Regarding relations with Israel, the Syrian president stressed that his country “prefers an agreement that returns the Syrian territories that have been occupied since December,” emphasizing that it “does not support the broad normalization agreement that the Trump administration has pushed other regional governments to sign.”
He added that “negotiations with Israel are difficult but are continuing with the support of the United States and other international parties,” noting that “the terms of any future agreement will require Israel to withdraw to the positions where its forces were stationed before the fall of the Assad regime on December 8.”
Al-Sharaa concluded by saying: “I believe that the United States is the only country in the world that can control Israel’s actions.”
Earlier on Tuesday, a historic visit by Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa to the White House – the first by a Syrian president – and a meeting with US President Donald Trump concluded, during which the suspension of most sanctions was extended for 180 days, and discussions were held regarding Syria joining the international coalition against ISIS, cooperation in combating terrorism, and economic recovery, in exchange for Syrian demands to stop Israeli strikes in the south and to develop a roadmap for gradually lifting restrictions.
