The American website Axios reported on Friday that some members of the Republican Party in the United States have begun to escalate their rhetoric against immigration following the shooting of two National Guard members near the White House.
Some party members called for a complete halt to immigration from Islamic countries and the expulsion of “all Islamists” from the United States.
Last Wednesday, an Afghan suspect carried out an attack near the White House in Washington, D.C., leaving two victims in critical condition before one of them died. The 29-year-old suspect came to the United States from Afghanistan in 2021 with the CIA and other U.S. agencies in Kandahar.
President Donald Trump said the incident “underscores the greatest threat to U.S. national security,” calling for a review of all arrivals from Afghanistan during the Biden administration and for “all necessary measures to be taken to ensure the removal of any alien who does not belong in the country or add no benefit to it.”
In Congress, some Republican figures called for more stringent measures, with Senator Tommy Tuberville calling for “banning all Muslim immigrants and expelling every Muslim living among us waiting to carry out an attack,” as he put it.
MP Mary Miller said: “They should all be expelled immediately,” while MP Chip Roy called for “stopping the importation of Islamists and expelling them,” as he put it.
This escalation comes at a time when the US administration is taking steps to reduce immigration from Muslim-majority countries, including Trump’s announcement last June of a travel ban from Afghanistan, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen, and the termination of Temporary Protected Status for immigrants from several countries, including Afghanistan and Syria.
Senator Rick Scott is expected to push for a vote on a bill that would require periodic vetting of Afghan immigrants who arrived in 2021 and 2022 without proper documentation, to ensure that no security threat is repeated.
