Reuters reported on Monday that a liquefied natural gas tanker had crossed the Strait of Hormuz heading east, in the first sign of a return to normal shipping traffic following the agreement between the United States and Iran.
The agency quoted ship tracking data as saying that the tanker continued its course through the strategic strait that connects the Arabian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.
The tanker’s passage comes after a period of security and military tensions that affected the movement of commercial ships and energy tankers in the vital waterway, which is one of the most important routes for transporting oil and gas in the world.
The Pakistani Prime Minister, whose country played the role of mediator between the two sides, announced that the United States and Iran would sign a memorandum of understanding in Switzerland next Friday, while US President Donald Trump confirmed that the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened and that the naval blockade imposed on Iranian ports would end.
According to the draft agreement reported by the Iranian news agency Mehr, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz will take place within 30 days according to agreed arrangements, and negotiations will continue during the 60-day ceasefire period to reach a more comprehensive agreement.
