The American news website Axios reported on Saturday that US Navy ships had passed through the Strait of Hormuz that day.
Axios quoted a US official as saying that “US Navy ships crossed the Strait of Hormuz today.”
The official added that “the passage of American ships through the Strait of Hormuz is the first since the start of the war and was done without coordination with Tehran.”
Shipping data and media reports earlier on Saturday showed movements of ships and oil tankers toward the Strait of Hormuz, ahead of the start of negotiations between the United States and Iran in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad.
CNN reported that “a number of ships began heading towards the Strait of Hormuz as talks began, amid cautious monitoring by international parties.”
These moves come amid a tense regional atmosphere as the outcome of the negotiations taking place in Islamabad is awaited. These negotiations include several issues, most notably Tehran’s condition that the talks begin with American pledges that include a ceasefire in Lebanon and the lifting of sanctions imposed on it.
