Finance Committee - Directive to be patient regarding the 2025 budget and prepare for 2026Al-Maalouma / Special..
The Parliamentary Finance Committee considered, on Thursday, the government’s delay in submitting the 2025 budget tables to the House of Representatives for approval until now a legal violation.
Committee member Moeen Al-Kadhimi told Al-Maalouma Agency, “The government’s delay in submitting the 2025 budget tables is a legal violation, as financing and spending since the beginning of the year and continuing until now is problematic, given that the Triennial Budget Law No. 13 of 2023 obligated the government to submit budget tables for approval annually, as happened in 2024.”
He added, “The government should have submitted the 2025 budget tables before the end of 2024, but they were delayed. Recently, a directive was issued from the Prime Minister’s Office to the Ministry of Finance to wait regarding the 2025 budget tables and prepare for the 2026 budget.”
He ruled out “approving the budget schedules soon,” given that the government only has five months left in its term, and that it continues to fund employee and pensioner salaries, social welfare, and operational and investment expenses based on the state treasury.
Regarding the 2026 budget, Al-Kadhimi said: “If the government is serious about preparing it, it should start doing so now, based on oil price estimates and market conditions, so that the draft can be submitted to the next government.”
