Water policy and climate security specialist Sameh Al-Maqdadi confirmed that the Tigris and Euphrates rivers have lost approximately 60% of their water flow due to dams constructed by Turkey. He noted that Iraq currently receives approximately 500 cubic meters per second, compared to its previous share of 450 cubic meters per second when the population did not exceed 10 million.
Al-Muqdadi told Al-Maalouma, “The agreement signed between Iraq and Turkey in 1946 is binding on both parties and stipulates that no dams or water projects will be built without Baghdad’s approval. However, Turkey ignores this and believes it can solve its security and economic problems by controlling the water.”
He added, “Ankara does not recognize the Tigris and Euphrates as international rivers, but rather considers them transboundary rivers,” warning that “Iraq no longer has sufficient water resources to manage them optimally.”
Al-Muqdadi pointed out that “the water file is linked to two basic aspects: technical and political, calling for addressing this issue at a strategic level that guarantees Iraq’s water rights and maintains its water and food security.”
