Shafaq News – Baghdad
An informed source stated on Saturday that the results of the investigation into the attack on the Kormor oil field in the Kurdistan Region will be submitted to caretaker Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani on Sunday for a decision.
The source told Shafaq News Agency that “the committee tasked with investigating the incident of targeting the Kormor field in the Kurdistan Region has not yet found any evidence to prove that the attack was carried out by a missile or a drone, after conducting a comprehensive field survey of the site of the incident.”
He added that “the committee will finalize its full report this evening after completing the necessary technical audits to accurately determine the means of attack,” indicating that “the final report will be submitted tomorrow to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces for approval, in preparation for its official announcement.”
In addition, security expert Sarmad Al-Bayati confirmed to the agency that “the ongoing investigations into the targeting of the Kormor gas field in the Kurdistan Region have not yet reached any conclusion that the attack was carried out by a drone or missiles,” noting that “the incident caused significant damage and impacts that affected about six Iraqi governorates.”
Al-Bayati explained that “there are several paths being explored to determine who is behind the attack,” stressing that “the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces will soon announce the parties involved, amid widespread anticipation from the Iraqi public for the results of the investigation.”
He added that “the possibility of an external operation at the present time seems unlikely,” suggesting that “the targeting was an internal operation linked to multiple factors, including political tension and perhaps the repercussions of the election results, in addition to possible economic dimensions.”
A high-ranking source told the agency earlier on Saturday that the first steps to export LPG gas from the Kormor field in the Kurdistan Region had begun, confirming that this step is part of a trial process that paves the way for the start of regular exports in the coming hours.
The convoy of the federal delegation returned to the capital, Baghdad, on Friday evening, after completing a field tour of the Kormor gas field to review the security and technical situation following the recent attack that targeted the field and affected production and energy supply operations.
An informed source told Shafaq News Agency that the delegation held a series of meetings with the field management and security officials to discuss measures to enhance protection and secure production lines, in addition to assessing the extent of the damage and technical plans to address the effects of the recent attack. The source noted that the delegation will prepare a comprehensive report to be submitted to the federal government, which includes recommendations to support energy security and enhance cooperation between security agencies in Baghdad and Erbil to prevent the recurrence of attacks targeting gas fields.
Last Wednesday night, the Kormor gas field in the Chamchamal district was attacked by drones, resulting in a fire in one of the fields, without any human casualties, while the field suffered material damage, according to security sources.
The incident resulted in a halt to gas supplies to power generation plants, according to the Ministries of Natural Resources and Electricity in the Kurdistan Region.
