On Saturday, a leader in the coordination framework revealed an American message addressed to the highest religious authority in Iraq through an intermediary, in which Washington confirmed that it does not support a specific name for the position of Prime Minister, nor does it interfere in the selection of the candidate.
Abdul Rahman al-Jazaeri told Shafaq News Agency that the United States informed the religious authority in Iraq, through an intermediary, that it does not support a specific name for the position of Prime Minister, nor does it interfere in naming him, and that it respects the opinion of the religious authority and the Iraqi people, as the matter is an internal affair.
Earlier, a leader in the framework revealed that the leadership of the coordinating framework held a closed meeting, separate from its regular meeting and in the absence of candidates for the position, to discuss the mechanisms for choosing the most suitable person to head the next government, with this matter to be decided after the election of the Speaker of Parliament and his two deputies.
He noted that there are five potential candidates for the position, including current Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, in addition to former prime ministers and National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji.
The framework had acknowledged that negotiations regarding the appointment of the prime minister had reached a near-dead end, given the lack of consensus among the Shiite forces and the objection of some parties to renewing al-Sudani’s mandate, while emphasizing that the current stage requires choosing a figure who enjoys internal and international acceptance in order to overcome the political deadlock.
