The European Union agreed on Thursday to designate Iran’s Revolutionary Guard as a “terrorist organization,” while Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi considered the European position “a grave strategic mistake that severely harms its interests.”
The EU’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, said that the foreign ministers of the EU member states agreed to include the Iranian Revolutionary Guard on the list of “terrorist organizations,” considering the decision a crucial step in confronting the practices of the Iranian regime.
Callas added, in a post on the “X” platform, that “any regime that kills thousands of its own people is heading towards its demise.”
This decision comes after years of hesitation in taking a similar step, repeated demands from European member states and parliamentarians, and mounting political pressure due to the suppression of protests inside Iran, the regional role of the Revolutionary Guard, and accusations of supporting armed groups and threatening the security and stability of the region.
In response, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi wrote in a post on the “X” platform that “several countries are currently seeking to avoid an all-out war in our region, but there is no European country among them. Rather, Europe is preoccupied with fueling the conflict.”
He added: “After seeking to implement the ‘rapid return’ mechanism for military force at the request of the United States, it is now committing another grave strategic error by classifying our national army as a ‘terrorist organization’.”
He continued: “Regardless of the blatant hypocrisy of its selective outrage – having taken no action in response to the Israeli genocide in Gaza, while rushing to ‘defend human rights’ in Iran – this European media stunt is primarily intended to cover up its sharp decline.”
He continued: “Moreover, given that the continent would be significantly affected by a full-scale war in our region – including the implications of higher energy prices – the EU’s current stance is severely damaging its interests. Europeans deserve better than what their governments are offering.”
