The New York Times revealed that the Pentagon has deployed hundreds of special operations forces to the Middle East as part of strengthening its military presence amid escalating tensions with Iran.
The newspaper report quoted US officials as saying that these forces would join US Marine Corps and paratrooper units already deployed in the region, to provide additional options for President Donald Trump should he decide to launch a military campaign.
The report indicated that the special forces include elements from the US Army’s Rangers units, along with Navy SEALs, noting that they have not yet been assigned specific tasks.
It is likely that these forces will be used in several missions, including protecting the Strait of Hormuz, or participating in a possible operation to control Kharg Island, which is a major center for exporting Iranian oil in the Gulf, as well as the possibility of carrying out operations targeting nuclear facilities such as the Isfahan site.
She added that these reinforcements come in parallel with the deployment of about 2,500 US Marines via landing ships that recently arrived in the region, in addition to sending about 2,000 soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division.
The newspaper quoted a military official as saying that the location of the paratroopers’ deployment was not disclosed, but that they were within range of Iran and could be used in possible ground operations in coordination with special forces and marines.
According to the report, the military options being considered by the Pentagon also include reopening the Strait of Hormuz, given the threats to shipping in the Gulf.
