Economist - Trumps tariffs will end the dominance of substandard goods in IraqAl-Maalouma/Baghdad..
Economic expert Diaa Al-Mohsen confirmed on Tuesday that the customs duties imposed by former US President Donald Trump on imports from some countries, particularly European and Chinese, would push international companies to seek alternative markets to the US market, indicating that Iraq could be one of the potential destinations for these companies. Al-
Mohsen told Al-Maalouma Agency that “the protectionist measures previously taken by Trump, by imposing high customs duties on imported goods, prompted many major companies to reconsider their marketing and export strategies.”
He explained that “European and Chinese companies, in particular, will head to search for more open and flexible markets, which puts Iraq among the options for commercial expansion, especially in light of the local demand for products of solid origin.”
Al-Mohsen pointed out that “the orientation of these companies to the Iraqi market may contribute to improving the quality of domestic commodity supply and constitutes an opportunity to limit the spread of poor-quality goods controlled by some unregulated import networks, which seek to make profits at the expense of product quality.”
He concluded by saying, “The shifts in international trade represent a strategic opportunity for economic decision-makers in Iraq, if they are properly exploited by regulating imports, updating standard specifications, and supporting customs infrastructure.”
