Economic researcher, Diaa Abdul Karim, believes that the future of the Greater Faw Port and the nature of commercial activities in this port are directly linked to Khor Abdullah.
Abdul Karim told Al-Maalouma, “The Kuwaiti Mubarak Port is a formal port, but Kuwait wants this port to demarcate maritime borders and control Iraqi waters in Khor Abdullah, so that it can be a partner in the transportation revenues generated in the Greater Faw Port.”
He added, “Demarcating the waters in Khor Abdullah will not be in Iraq’s interest, as the country’s economic interest dictates not setting borders for territorial waters in this creek, as it is purely Iraqi, and old maps confirm this.”
He explained that “the future of the Greater Faw Port requires the current government and those that will follow it to keep the waters of Khor Abdullah purely Iraqi, by not setting borders with Kuwait, as setting borders would make Kuwait a partner in the shipping fees that Iraq receives through this port.”
