Economic expert Safwan Qusay expected on Wednesday that the 2025 general budget will witness a significant increase in non-oil revenues, exceeding the 12 trillion dinar barrier achieved in the previous year.
Qusay said in a statement to Al-Maalouma, “The expected non-oil revenues during the current fiscal year may reach more than 12 trillion Iraqi dinars through fees, taxes, and government services,” noting that “this requires rehabilitating federal ministries and transforming them into productive ministries capable of maximizing revenues.”
He added that “ministries such as transportation, health, agriculture, water, and electricity are supposed to be able to at least cover their expenses if modern and smart collection systems that rely on technology are adopted to reduce tax evasion.” He explained that “the goal of taxes is not collection per se, but rather redirecting funds to income-generating projects that contribute to supporting the national economy.”
He stressed that “oil remains Iraq’s primary resource, but sound planning requires investing in other scattered resources and employing them in a better way to achieve sustainable economic development and reduce dependence on oil revenues.”
