Iranian media reported on Sunday evening that the Iranian delegation had suspended negotiations with the American side in Switzerland in protest against threats made by US President Donald Trump against Tehran.
The Fars news agency quoted an informed source as saying that “Trump’s threat halted the Swiss negotiations and cast uncertainty on their continuation.”
For his part, the head of the negotiating delegation, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, wrote in a post on the “X” platform, saying: “Do they not think that if their threats were effective, they would not have reached the state of helplessness they are in today? We do not pay any attention to the threats of the Americans.”
Qalibaf continued in his post: “It is better for them to pay attention to their statements, as our armed forces are ready to respond to them in another way. Whatever they say, we are the ones who are working on the ground.”
Meanwhile, the Tasnim news agency, which is close to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, confirmed that “the Iranian negotiating team is leaving the negotiating site in protest against Trump’s threats.”
US President Donald Trump had threatened, coinciding with the talks between the US and Iranian delegations in Switzerland, to seize Iran in response to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s confirmation that his country would not back down from its right to enrich uranium, and that the other side was obliged to accept that.
In response, Trump said, “Pezeshkian has to play by the rules or we will take over Iran,” adding in response to Iran’s refusal to give up enrichment, “He (Pezeshkian) should be careful.”
Trump also stated that he told the Iranians that “if you close the Strait of Hormuz, you will not have a country, and you will not even be able to return to it.”
