The exchange markets in the capital Baghdad and in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region, as well as a number of governorates, witnessed an almost complete halt in dollar trading on Tuesday morning, as a result of the closure of most exchange and money transfer offices on the occasion of the parliamentary elections holiday.
A Shafaq News Agency correspondent said that dollar trading has been “almost at a standstill” since the morning hours, as exchange offices closed their doors in compliance with the official holiday decision, while activity was limited to some small individual transactions in residential areas.
The dollar exchange rate against the dinar in Baghdad markets closed yesterday evening, Monday, at a selling price of 142,750 dinars and a buying price of 140,750 dinars per 100 dollars. In Erbil, the dollar witnessed a slight increase, recording a selling price of 141,350 dinars and a buying price of 141,250 dinars per 100 dollars, with the closing of the stock exchange.
It is worth noting that the government announced that Tuesday is a public holiday throughout the country, coinciding with the start of the parliamentary elections, in which citizens will go to the polls to choose their representatives in the new House of Representatives.
