An Iranian report revealed on Sunday that US President Donald Trump has put forward a set of key conditions as a basis for any potential agreement with Iran. The newspaper described these demands as “practically closing the door to a settlement” and indicated that Washington, instead of genuinely seeking an agreement, is working to create the atmosphere for escalating the confrontation.
According to what the Iranian newspaper Khorasan quoted from informed Iranian sources, the American conditions include “the complete closure of the Iranian nuclear program, the handover of all quantities of uranium enriched at levels of 3.67%, 20% and 60%, imposing restrictions on the range and number of Iranian ballistic missiles, an official commitment from Tehran to stop supporting resistance forces in the region, the disarmament of Hezbollah in Lebanon, in addition to official recognition of Israel.”
According to the Khorasan report, these conditions do not represent a realistic basis for any negotiations, but rather reflect an American tendency to intensify political and security pressures on Iran, instead of seeking a balanced settlement.
In contrast, Abdolreza Faraji-Rad, a professor of geopolitics at Tehran University, offered a less hardline interpretation in his interview with the newspaper, noting that Washington had softened its tone compared to previous months.
Faraji Rad, in a statement carried by Jamaran News Agency, said that US envoy Steve Wittkopf recently indicated that his country “may talk to Iran on 4 axes,” after previously talking about “3 strict conditions.”
He explained that the US administration divided the nuclear file into two tracks: “Dialogue on the principle of enrichment, without publicly adhering to the idea of zero enrichment, and dialogue on the uranium stockpile of about 408 kilograms.”
He added that the other two axes are regional issues and reducing the range of ballistic missiles, considering that “the new American language is less threatening than before,” which may indicate a relative decline in the ceiling of American demands, in exchange for a conditional Iranian willingness to enter into a negotiating track.
He added: “If we take Wittkopf’s statements as a benchmark, it can be said that both sides – the Iranian and the American – have eased their preconditions, and this means that the likelihood of resuming negotiations in the coming weeks is greater than before.”
He stressed that the political history of relations between the two countries shows that rising tensions often precede the opening of channels of dialogue, not the other way around.
In closing, Faraji Rad stated that the indirect communication channels between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and US envoy Wittkopf, which had quieted down in recent months, have resumed activity, in parallel with the escalation of mutual media rhetoric.
