The US Central Command announced early Saturday that it had carried out airstrikes targeting Iranian sites on Sirik Island near the Strait of Hormuz, in response to the Revolutionary Guard’s targeting of a commercial vessel last Wednesday.
The Central Command said the strikes targeted missile and drone storage sites, as well as coastal radar sites, while the Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced that it had repelled the attacks, confirming that they targeted two observation towers.
According to media reports, this is not the first time that Serik Island has been hit, but the targets announced this time are of high military value.
In this context, US Vice President J.D. Vance said that “violence will be met with violence,” following the US airstrike.
Vance added, in a post on the X platform, that “Iran signed the ceasefire agreement, and we have adhered to it. If they have disagreements about how to implement the memorandum of understanding, they can communicate by phone, but violence will be met with violence.”
For his part, the head of the National Security Committee in the Iranian parliament said that the United States “attacked Iran again in the midst of negotiations,” considering that “the reckless violation of the ceasefire will be followed by American retreat and regret.”
In contrast, the Iranian news agency Mehr quoted the director of East Hormozgan ports as confirming that the Sirik port had not suffered any damage as a result of the American strikes, and that the port continues to operate normally, and that its equipment or facilities were not damaged.
In a subsequent development, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy announced it had targeted US military positions in the region.
In a statement, she said the response came after “Israel violated the ceasefire in southern Lebanon, and the United States broke its commitments by launching an air attack on the Iranian coast under the pretext of a ship violating the ceasefire by passing through an unauthorized route in the Strait of Hormuz.”
The statement added that “Article 5 of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding stipulates that the arrangements for controlling transit and traffic in the Strait of Hormuz are the responsibility of Iran,” warning that “any repetition of aggression will be met with a broader response.”
