Amer Al-Fayez, a leader in the Coordination Framework and head of the “Design” Alliance, confirmed on Sunday that there is no specific date for choosing a candidate for the position of Prime Minister, indicating that the Framework has “a long time” before deciding on the person who will be tasked with forming the new government.
The Shura Council of the Islamic Dawa Party announced yesterday, Saturday, the nomination of the party’s Secretary-General, Nouri al-Maliki, for the position of Prime Minister in the next Iraqi government.
In this regard, Al-Fayez told Shafaq News Agency that the procedures for selecting the prime minister “actually begin after the ratification of the election results, then the election of the Speaker of Parliament and the President of the Republic, after which the framework candidate is tasked with forming the government,” stressing that talk of near dates is “inaccurate and not based on the reality of the constitutional process.”
According to the head of the Design Alliance, there is no meeting currently scheduled to discuss the names of candidates or to choose the most suitable person to head the government, explaining that the forces within the framework “have not agreed on any name so far,” and that what is being circulated in the media “does not represent an official position and was not raised within the meetings.”
Al-Fayez pointed out that the framework has set clear criteria for the person who will assume the position of Prime Minister, while the committee concerned within the framework is studying the names that wish to run for office according to these criteria, and will submit its final report to the leadership of the framework, which will decide on the identity of the next Prime Minister.
The leader concluded that all options are still open, and that the coordinating body will not rush the decision before completing a shared political vision that ensures the selection of the most capable person to manage the next stage.
Last week, the Coordination Framework announced the formation of two committees. The first committee, which includes Ammar al-Hakim, Humam Hamoudi, and Abdul-Sada al-Fariji, is concerned with forming the government. The second committee, which includes Nouri al-Maliki, Hadi al-Amiri, Faleh al-Fayyad, and Mohsen al-Mandalawi, is concerned with negotiating with political parties.
According to sources who spoke to Shafaq News Agency, the committee for interviewing candidates for the next Iraqi government, which is part of the coordination framework, has received 5 CVs from candidates for the position.
The names are State of Law leader Nouri al-Maliki, caretaker Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, intelligence chief Hamid al-Shatri, former Minister of Youth and Sports Abdul Hussein Abtan, and head of the Accountability and Justice Commission Bassem al-Badri.
