A member of the parliamentary legal committee warned on Thursday of great strife in the case of the application of Article 140 of the Constitution, considering that its application will damage the social fabric and cause a real threat to the national security of Iraq, calling for the survival of the situation on what is in the disputed areas.
Hussein al-Aqabi said in an interview with Alsumaria News that “the application of Article 140 of the Constitution may enter the country in a great strife,” noting that “Iraq is a unified country and if the parties have certain point of view in certain territories does not necessarily have to stick to their point of view after a year or more or less”.
He added that it is better to keep the situation on what it is and that all parties and components in those areas are involved in managing the status of their areas, stressing that “the need to remain the situation on what is in the provinces where the areas disputed regardless of the constitutionality of Article 140 or Access to its constitution “.
“The continuation of the implementation of Article 140 will involve us with problems deeper than can be envisaged and with a large regional and international scope and will damage the social fabric of the Iraqi state and a real threat to the national security of Iraq.”
On Tuesday, July 30, 2019, the Supreme Federal Court ruled that article 140 of the Constitution of the Republic of Iraq should remain in force.
