Democrats call for US states to secede before Trump returns to presidencyShafaq News/ A prominent Democratic senator in the US Senate has submitted a proposal that explores the possibility of several US states seceding before Donald Trump takes office as president, according to Newsweek.

The newspaper reported that Liz Krugers, a Democratic senator from New York and chair of the Senate Finance Committee, had proposed that New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont could secede from the United States and join Canada instead.

According to her, she put forward this proposal because these states in particular may face great difficulties under the new Trump administration.

Kruger explained that Trump’s return to power could pose a threat to liberal states, such as her own, due to the possibility of reducing federal funding for them as a result of their status as safe havens for immigrants.

The Democratic senator said such steps are already being discussed within the new president-elect’s administration.

It is worth noting that this is not the first time that Kruger has presented a radical and unworkable plan to confront Trump’s policies. In September, before he won the election, she suggested that a group of blue states join Canada.

“I think I would suggest to Canada that we be their southeastern province, rather than us trying to cross the border at night illegally without being noticed, which is difficult because there are so many of us,” she told City and State New York at the time.

She added: “Although I did not obtain the consent of the other states, I proposed that the states of New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont unite to form a wonderful new province, like the province of southeastern Canada.”

Trump, who has made curbing illegal immigration a key part of his 2024 campaign, has repeatedly pledged to carry out the largest-ever campaign to deport illegal immigrants and set plans to return migrants to their countries.

He previously asserted that if he won the election, he would form a special task force of representatives from elite law enforcement agencies that would fight criminals among illegal immigrants.

It is noteworthy that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had announced in late October that he would reduce the number of new immigrants who would be allowed to enter Canada after admitting that his government had failed to achieve the right balance in immigration policies.

He pointed out that immigration to Canada is necessary for its future, but at the same time it must be controlled and must be sustainable.
