Shafaq News/ The State of Law and Kurdistan Democratic Party blocs commented today, Saturday, on the issue of the existence of a political agreement to elect the new Speaker of the House of Representatives next Tuesday of this week.
The representative of the State of Law coalition, Thaer Al-Jubouri, told Shafaq News Agency, “Until now, there is no official notification from the Presidency of Parliament regarding holding any session soon to elect the Speaker of the House of Representatives, especially since Parliament is currently in a legislative recess, and holding the session requires collecting the signatures of 50 representatives.” “, stressing that “there is no collection of signatures so far.”
Al-Jubouri stated, “There is nothing regarding an agreement between the political blocs to hold any session during the current week, and according to all data and information, the election of the new speaker of parliament will take place after the provincial council elections, and there is difficulty in holding any session currently due to the legislative holiday and the preoccupation of the representatives and blocs.” In advertising campaigns, especially with the elections approaching.”
For his part, the representative of the Kurdistan Democratic Bloc, Sabah Sobhi, told Shafaq News Agency that the Sunni blocs submitted a request to the Presidency of the House of Representatives to hold an emergency session on Tuesday to elect a new speaker of the House.
He explained that the Council Presidency did not announce its position and did not officially set a date for electing a Council President.
He stated that the Sunni blocs did not agree on a candidate to elect a new speaker of the Council, and that if the coordination framework is not convinced of the issue of holding the session at the present time, the quorum for its holding will not be complete and the session to elect the Speaker of Parliament will be postponed until after the elections.
Earlier, an informed political source revealed that the coordination framework, which brings together the Shiite political forces, set a time limit for choosing the Speaker of the House of Representatives as a replacement for the outgoing member, Muhammad al-Halbousi, and indicated that the framework selected only three candidates to assume the position.
The Presidency of the Iraqi Council of Representatives decided to officially terminate the membership of Council Speaker Muhammad al-Halbousi, based on the decision of the Federal Supreme Court, as of the fourteenth of November 2023.
On Tuesday, November 14, the Federal Supreme Court, “the highest judicial authority in Iraq,” announced the termination of the membership of Parliament Speaker Muhammad Al-Halbousi, against the backdrop of a lawsuit filed against him by Representative Laith Al-Dulaimi, in which he accused him of forging his (Al-Dulaimi’s) resignation from membership in the House of Representatives. As a result, the Federal Court ruled to terminate their membership (Al-Halbousi and Al-Dulaimi).
