Ghaleb Mohammed, a member of the Change bloc, confirmed on Saturday that there is a raging conflict within the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) between Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani, amid growing signs of corruption and internal division.
“The Kurdistan Democratic Party is suffering from internal rifts and a fierce power struggle among its prominent leaders, specifically between Masrour Barzani and Nechirvan Barzani,” Mohammed told Al-Maalouma News Agency. He noted that “leader Hoshyar Zebari’s public attacks on Kurdish officials reflect the extent of the tension within the ruling party.”
He added that “Zebari’s statements regarding corruption within the ranks of power, even though he is one of the most prominent leaders of the party, represent a dangerous indicator of the depth of the crisis,” noting that “the Democratic Party’s control of nearly 70% of the region’s governance has contributed to the perpetuation of corruption and the absence of justice in the distribution of wealth.”
Mohammed pointed out that “Kurdish citizens face stifling living conditions amidst the political parties’ struggle for influence and the absence of a clear vision for economic and administrative reform.”
It is noteworthy that the prominent leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Hoshyar Zebari, had previously launched a scathing attack via a tweet on his personal account, in which he criticized some Kurdish officials, accusing them of corruption and failure to meet the needs of the Kurdish citizen, who faces difficult living conditions and stifling crises with no solutions in sight.
