Shafaq News/ The Central Bank of Iraq revealed, on Thursday, that the internal debt increased by 5.4% during the current year, indicating that the Ministry of Finance is the most indebted government institution.
The bank said in a report seen by Shafak News Agency, “The domestic debt balance in the first quarter of 2024 recorded an increase of 5.4% to reach 73.3 trillion dinars, compared to 69.5 trillion dinars for the same quarter last year.”
He explained that “the increase is attributed to a 139.9% increase in the bonds paragraph, despite the decrease in most of its other paragraphs,” noting that “the debt was distributed among loans to financial institutions and others to government banks, debt to the Ministry of Finance, transfers discounted from the Central Bank, and treasury bonds and transfers from banks.”
He pointed out that “the largest proportion of debts is due to the Ministry of Finance, amounting to 41 trillion, 393 billion and 142 million dinars,” adding that “there is a decrease in the contribution rates of debt items, excluding bonds, which is a healthy indicator since the government has begun to rely on the public to finance the deficit, which has a positive impact through reliance on cash circulating in the economy.”
