Economist Manar Al-Abidi commented on Iraq’s rising domestic debt levels, calling on parliamentarians to coordinate efforts to prevent the debt from reaching record levels, placing the responsibility on Iraqis.
Al-Obeidi addressed members of the Iraqi parliament and its finance committee in a post on his Facebook page, saying: “Either you pledge that you, along with the members of the current government, will pay the internal debts that Iraq is currently incurring from your personal resources, or you will prevent them from occurring.” He noted that “these debts are on the shoulders of future generations, and they will struggle to pay them off just as we are struggling today to pay off the debts of previous governments.”
Addressing parliamentarians, he added, “Instead of focusing on a few unimportant issues, coordinate your efforts to prevent these debts from reaching record levels for the Iraqi people and employees.”
The economic expert addressed the Iraqis, saying: “Have you heard of some payroll outlets using your Key Card and taking out a loan in your name, only to discover later that a portion of your salary was being deducted to pay off this debt that you had no idea about? And when you consult the judiciary, it says that you were the one who granted this authority to the outlet owner to take out the loan when you gave him the card. And when you go to look for the outlet owner, you find that he is closed or traveling?” He explained that “what is happening is exactly the same, but on a much larger scale.”
Al-Obeidi blamed the Iraqis for the problem, telling them: “All government loans are taken with the authority granted by the House of Representatives, which the people gave the voter card, which is equivalent to your Key Card. No one will blame anyone in the future but himself, because he gave this authority to someone who was not up to the responsibility and prevented the borrowing process in the name of the citizen.”
