Hussein Jassim, a member of the Belt and Road Initiative movement, revealed on Monday that American pressure is preventing Iraq from officially joining the Chinese initiative, considering that moving in this direction represents an opportunity to escape American hegemony.
Jassim told Al-Maalouma Agency that “the United States is exercising clear restrictions on the Iraqi government to discourage it from joining the Belt and Road Initiative launched by China.”
He added that “Iraq is an important geographical bridge linking Asia with Europe and the Gulf region, which places it at the heart of the Belt and Road project,” noting that “Washington seeks to keep Iraq weak economically and security-wise for the coming years.”
Jassim stressed that “implementing the Belt and Road Initiative agreement signed by former Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi is the only solution to escape the circle of American influence and strengthen Iraq’s economic position.”
