The summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump and his trade team concluded in Beijing on Thursday, with both sides reaffirming the importance of maintaining positive momentum in economic relations between the two countries.
Xi Jinping said that “facts have proven time and again that there are no winners in a trade war,” stressing that “the essence of China-US relations is based on mutual benefit.”
He added that the economic and trade working groups from both sides reached a balanced and generally positive outcome, calling for efforts to maintain the hard-won positive momentum.
The Chinese president stressed that the Taiwan issue is “the most important in Sino-American relations,” warning that handling it badly “will lead to a clash and push bilateral relations into a very dangerous situation.”
He pointed out that “Taiwan independence and peace across the Taiwan Strait are incompatible,” noting that maintaining peace and stability in the strait is the most important common denominator between Beijing and Washington.
For his part, Trump said that “US-China relations will get better.”
The official Chinese news agency reported that President Xi Jinping affirmed his readiness to work with Trump to lead relations toward a better future.
Xi Jinping continued, according to the agency: “I agreed with Trump to establish a constructive and stable strategic relationship between China and America,” noting that “the strategic relationship between Beijing and Washington is not just a slogan but must be translated into actions in the same direction.”
He also said that “the essence of economic and trade relations between China and the United States is mutual benefit and fruitful cooperation for both sides.”
He stressed that “equal consultation is the best option in dealing with disputes and tensions,” noting that “China welcomes strengthening mutually beneficial cooperation with the United States.”
The summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart Donald Trump began early Thursday in Beijing, amid anticipation of the results of talks covering the Iran war, trade, artificial intelligence and Taiwan.
