Former Iraqi President Barham Salih was chosen on Friday to be the new United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
According to a letter signed by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on December 11, and reported by Reuters, Saleh was appointed for a five-year term beginning January 1, 2026.
According to the agency, this appointment is temporary and requires the approval of the Executive Committee of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
