The Baghdad Digital Transformation Council announced on Monday that the adoption of electronic payments has achieved significant growth over the past two years, while pointing to a qualitative leap in digital transformation thanks to government and Central Bank decisions. Haider Al-Omran, head of the Baghdad Digital Transformation and Electronic Payment Council, told the official agency, “There has been significant growth over the past two years thanks to government decisions to adopt electronic payments and Central Bank instructions, which has led to a significant increase in the volume of transactions.”
He added, “The number of cards issued across Iraq has reached approximately 25 million, a significant number achieved in a short period. If we compare the last two years with the past ten years, we find a significant leap and continued increase.”
He also explained that “the Baghdad Council specializes in electronic payments and digital transformation and includes a team of experts. Therefore, we support government departments and institutions through training and raising awareness of electronic payments.”
Al-Omran also pointed out that “monitoring the performance of government departments in implementing electronic payments falls under the purview of the Central Bank through the Payments Department, which monitors the system’s implementation. Meanwhile, citizens can file a complaint through the Central Bank’s complaints box against any entity that fails to implement the electronic payment system or requires dealing with a specific company or card.”
