The Syrian Petroleum Company announced on Friday the launch of the first shipments of gasoline through Syrian ports towards the border crossings into Iraq.
Safwan Sheikh Ahmed, Director of Corporate Communications at the Syrian Petroleum Company, said in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency that three tankers loaded with petroleum products have arrived at Syrian ports, noting that the first tanker has been unloaded with a cargo of about 32,000 tons of gasoline, while the other two tankers are waiting their turn to begin unloading operations.
Sheikh Ahmed explained that the loading operations began on September 22, and that so far two convoys have been loaded, the first of which included 10 tankers, and the second of which included 55 tankers.
He pointed out that the ports and technical staff are ready to raise the loading capacity to 150 tankers per day, pending the arrival of the remaining tankers to complete the transport operations across the border crossings to Iraq.
It is worth noting that an Iraqi oil source informed Shafaq News Agency this morning, Friday, that shipments of gasoline have arrived at the Syrian port of Banias, in preparation for their transfer to Iraq via tankers.
According to the source, the shipments arrived at the port as part of the procedures for importing the first batch of gasoline through Syrian territory, indicating that the process of loading the material into tankers has begun in preparation for transporting it to Iraq.
The capital Baghdad and a number of Iraqi provinces have been experiencing a gasoline supply crisis for weeks, following a temporary improvement in the markets last month, amid continued fuel shortages affecting several areas in the country.
Earlier this month, Oil Minister Bassem Mohammed al-Abadi confirmed that work was underway to address the shortage of gasoline, and indicated that shipments of gasoline would soon arrive in Iraq.
