Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zubaidi will head to the US capital, Washington, on Monday, at the head of a high-level delegation, in a visit that Baghdad has confirmed is of great importance, especially as it comes at a delicate regional time.
Iraqi government spokesman Haider al-Aboudi said at a press conference attended by Shafaq News Agency that “al-Zaidi’s visit to the United States is an embodiment of developing balanced foreign relations based on common interests.”
Al-Aboudi added that the memoranda of understanding that will be signed between Iraq and the United States will include the fields of oil and gas and the introduction of specialized American companies that will provide an increase in production capacity and find outlets that reduce the effects of the Strait of Hormuz.
He pointed out that the visit to the United States embodies the government’s ministerial program to strengthen relations with Washington, and that the visit’s discussions will focus on important issues, most notably the development of economic and investment relations.
Al-Aboudi explained that Al-Zidi will hold an important meeting with US President Donald Trump and senior officials in the United States, and that there are also meetings with economic and financial institutions and companies to activate the prospects for cooperation and dialogue in line with the interests of Iraq.
He continued: “Iraq is preparing to bring in American companies specializing in the field of oil and energy, and this will enhance and raise Iraqi oil production,” adding: “The oil file has special priority in this visit.”
The Iraqi government spokesman pointed out that there are important investments and agreements that will be signed during Al-Zaidi’s visit to Washington, and will be announced from there, the most important of which are in the field of oil and energy.
He pointed out that “Al-Zaidi’s visit to Washington is different from previous visits, and focuses on the economy, and there will be memoranda of understanding between the Iraqi and American Development and Energy Funds.”
Al-Aboudi stated that “relations between Iraq and the United States will move from crisis management to a long-term economic partnership.”
He added: “The development fund will be on the table for agreement through joint coordination, as Iraq will deposit limited quantities of oil exports in exchange for services provided by American companies, to revive the development requirements in Iraq.”
