Arrest warrants issued for Nour Zuhair and Haitham Al-Jabouri accused of the theft of the centuryShafaq News/ A judicial source reported on Tuesday that the Anti-Corruption Criminal Court issued two arrest warrants against “Nour Zuhair” and “Haitham Al-Jubouri”, who are accused of stealing tax deposits, known in the media as the “theft of the century.”

Nour Zuhair, the first defendant accused of stealing tax deposits in Iraq, was scheduled to appear at the Central Criminal Court in Baghdad for trial on Tuesday, but he did not show up.

Last Friday, Lebanese media reported that Iraqi businessman Nour Zuhair was involved in a traffic accident in the Hadath area of Beirut that almost cost him his life.

According to Lebanese media, Nour Zuhair was transferred to the hospital following the accident, where he received first aid.

A security source in Lebanon said on Saturday that the Iraqi businessman Nour Zuhair, who is suspected of being involved in the “theft of the century” case, had only been in Lebanon for 3 days.

The source told Shafaq News Agency that Zuhair left Lebanon yesterday, Friday, for the United Arab Emirates.

The security source did not comment on reports that Zuhair was involved in a traffic accident.

In contrast, sources at Saint Therese Hospital, located in the Hadath area, a suburb of Beirut, said that for professional medical reasons, they could not confirm or deny the presence of Nour Zuhair in the hospital, or whether he had entered the hospital in the first place after reports that he had sustained serious injuries in a traffic accident.

Zuhair recently appeared in a television interview defending himself and demanding that his trial be public, and threatened to “reveal names and details of corruption cases.”

As for the second accused, former member of parliament “Haitham Al-Jubouri”, he was arrested on November 30, 2022, by a force from the Supreme Anti-Corruption Commission.

A political source told Shafaq News Agency at the time, “The arrest came as a result of Al-Jubouri’s money swelling through unknown and illegal means,” stressing that “the arrest warrant is also related to confessions made by Nour Zuhair, the owner of Al-Ahdab Company and the main accused of the “theft of the century” to the judicial authorities against Al-Jubouri.”

At the beginning of 2023, the judiciary released Haitham Al-Jubouri on bail for his involvement in the theft of the century and illicit gains.

Al-Jubouri held several positions, including financial advisor to former Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, former deputy, and head of the Parliamentary Finance Committee in the previous parliamentary session.
