Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi confirmed on Sunday that he intends to brief Iraq and the Gulf states during a meeting in Oman on Monday on the details of the new maritime route in the Strait of Hormuz, amid regional moves aimed at regulating navigation and reducing tension in the strategic corridor.
Araghchi said in press statements that the meeting’s agenda will focus on the new maritime route, explaining that the Iranian side will present to the participating countries the details of the agreement reached with the Sultanate of Oman, along with maps related to the proposed route and the mechanism for navigation through it.
He stressed that the agreement with Muscat does not mean the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, noting that Tehran still links the reopening of the strait to the United States returning to its commitments contained in the Islamabad memorandum.
The Oman meeting comes at a time when consultations are continuing regarding navigation arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz, following Iranian-Omani understandings to find a new maritime route that allows the movement of ships within temporary arrangements, amid efforts to expand the circle of understanding to include countries in the region.
The meeting is expected to discuss the position of Iraq and the Gulf states on the new route, as well as the technical and security details related to the movement of ships in one of the most important maritime corridors for global energy and trade.
Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein confirmed to Araqchi on Saturday that the Iraqi delegation would participate in the meeting scheduled to be held in the Sultanate of Oman on Monday.
