Former Harvard professor and astrophysicist Avi Loeb believes that the failure of comet 3I/ATLAS to disintegrate near the sun indicates its artificial origin.
The scientist wrote on his blog: “The fact that 3I/ATLAS is still a single object is unusual for a normal comet.”
Loeb’s statement comes in response to a post published on November 11 on Astronomer’s Telegram platform, which stated that images of the object show that it did not disintegrate as it approached its closest orbit to the sun.
Russian scientists agree that the object 3I/ATLAS could not have come from our solar system, but rather from other star systems.
3I/ATLAS was first spotted on July 1 by the ATLAS automated telescope network, which was created by NASA to track potentially hazardous near-Earth asteroids.
3I/ATLAS is the third interstellar object discovered by astronomers since observations began.
