Lebanese President Joseph Aoun stressed on Monday the need to negotiate with Israel to resolve the outstanding issues between the two sides, noting that the current path in the region is one of crisis resolution, and we must be part of it.
This came in statements made to a delegation of economic journalists, coinciding with the start of the implementation of the first phase of US President Donald Trump’s plan to end the war in Gaza.
Aoun said, according to a statement from the presidency: “The Lebanese state had previously negotiated with Israel under American and United Nations auspices, which resulted in an agreement to demarcate the maritime border.”
He asked, “What’s stopping the same thing from happening again to find solutions to the outstanding problems?” adding, “Today, the general atmosphere is one of compromise, and negotiation is inevitable.”
Aoun added, “We cannot be outside the current path in the region, which is the path of crisis resolution, and we must be part of it, as we can no longer tolerate more war, destruction, killing, and displacement.”
Hezbollah and Israel fought a war that lasted more than a year, ending with a US-brokered ceasefire in November.
But Israel continues to launch strikes that it claims target Hezbollah military personnel and infrastructure, resulting in civilian casualties.
