The exchange rate of the US dollar in the Iranian free market recorded a new collapse of the local currency on Wednesday, after breaking the 120,000 toman barrier, continuing the accelerated decline of the toman in recent days.
According to Navasan, a platform specializing in monitoring exchange rates, the dollar reached 120,750 tomans, an increase of 1,700 tomans (approximately 1.43%) compared to the previous levels recorded yesterday, Tuesday, which were around 119,050 tomans per dollar.
This decline comes amid an atmosphere of anxiety on the Iranian street, as the continuous drop in the value of the toman is directly reflected in the prices of basic goods and services, and weakens the purchasing power of citizens, especially the middle and poor segments.
Economic observers believe that the dollar exceeding the 120,000 toman threshold constitutes an additional “negative psychological signal” in the markets, and pushes more traders to seek alternative havens such as gold and hard currencies, amid the absence of serious indications of addressing the structural causes of the crisis plaguing the Iranian economy.
