Shafaq News/ US authorities have charged an Iraqi man named Aqeel Abdul Jameel with illegally voting, a charge punishable by up to one year in prison, after he cast his ballot in the 2020 presidential election despite not holding US citizenship.
“Abdul Jamil, 45, was living in South Glens Falls, New York, when he committed the violation,” the New York Post reported, as translated by Shafaq News Agency. He had registered to vote with the Conservative Party a month before the election and was later found to be a supporter of President Trump, although his vote may fall within the framework of the suspicions Trump has long raised about election fraud.
The newspaper added, “Despite the indictment, Abdul Jameel has not yet been arrested,” stressing that he had been outside the United States “for a very long time,” claiming that “someone else may have used his social security number and identity to commit the crimes.”
“If I voted, they should have sent me a ballot,” Abdul Jameel said. “I left the United States years ago.”
According to the newspaper, Abdel-Jamil faces “a charge of voting for foreigners, a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in prison and a fine of up to $100,000.”
In an official statement, Acting Attorney General John Sarcone described Abdul Jameel’s actions as “a brazen and illegal act,” affirming “the Department of Justice’s commitment to prosecuting any attempts to undermine the integrity of the electoral process.”
