Ezzatollah Zarghami, a member of Iran’s Supreme Council of Cyberspace, threatened on Thursday to target oil wells in the Gulf states if the US strikes on his country continue.
Zarghami said in a post on the “ X ” platform: “If the attacks continue, tell the Gulf states to close their oil wells, otherwise Iran will burn them.”
He added that “a strike against Iran is a strike against all energy and economic equations in the world.”
Zarghami is a prominent conservative figure in Iran. He is a member of the Supreme Council of Cyberspace, a high-level body concerned with digital policies and the information field. He previously served as Minister of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts, and headed the official Iranian Radio and Television Organization for years.
This came after renewed US strikes on targets inside Iran, and Tehran’s response with attacks that it said targeted US military sites in Gulf countries, in one of the most serious waves of escalation since the fragile truce between the two sides began.
The escalation coincided with the funeral of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in the city of Mashhad, following a funeral procession inside Iraq.
Concerns have grown in energy markets as oil tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has almost ground to a halt, while marine insurers have warned of increased risks to ships transiting the region.
A large portion of global oil and gas exports, particularly from the Gulf states, pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
