The Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday afternoon that an oil tanker carrying two million barrels was hit by an Iranian drone near the Strait of Hormuz, according to a US official.
The official noted that “US forces shot down two drones that were targeting commercial vessels.”
Earlier today, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that an oil tanker was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz by an unidentified projectile.
Meanwhile, CNN reported on Saturday that the US Navy’s Joint Information Center raised the threat level in the Strait of Hormuz to “very high”.
Iran insists on compelling ships to comply with its instructions, threatening to impose fees for passage through the strait, while the United States and Gulf states reject these demands, asserting that the Strait of Hormuz is an international waterway despite being located within Iranian and Omani territorial waters.
This development comes after renewed tensions early this morning, following US airstrikes targeting sites on Iran’s southern coast, after days of calm following the announcement of the interim agreement between the United States and Iran in Switzerland regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to maritime navigation.
