An earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale struck the capital Tehran on Tuesday evening, and was felt by residents in parts of the city and surrounding areas.
According to the Iranian Seismological Center, the tremor occurred on the border between Tehran and Mazandaran provinces, near the city of Pardis, east of the capital, at 23:46 local time, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
There were no immediate official reports of casualties or material damage, while Iranian reports indicated that the tremor was felt in areas north of Tehran and Mazandaran, as well as Pardis, Bumehen and Rudehen.
Iran lies on a number of active seismic faults and experiences occasional tremors of varying intensity, some of which cause significant losses, particularly in densely populated areas or buildings that are less earthquake-resistant.
Tehran, one of Iran’s largest and most populous cities, is among the areas where any tremor raises renewed concerns about the infrastructure’s readiness to cope with a larger earthquake.
