Standard Poor’s Global Commodities confirmed on Monday that Iraq imported more than 56,000 barrels per day of refined petroleum products in the second quarter of 2025.
The company stated in a statement monitored by Shafaq News Agency that “Iraq, an OPEC member, imported 56,300 barrels per day of refined petroleum products in the second quarter of 2025, more than half of which was gasoline. This represents a decrease from 2023, when imports averaged 90,000 barrels per day.”
According to the company, “During the same period, Iraq exported more than 180,000 barrels per day of naphtha, most of it to the United Arab Emirates, while fuel oil exports amounted to approximately 300,000 barrels per day, supporting Iraqi officials’ claims that small refineries convert Iraqi crude oil into fuel oil.”
Iraq has a number of refineries, including the Baiji refinery, which was built in the 1980s, the Dora refinery in Baghdad, the Basra refinery, the newly constructed Karbala refinery, and several smaller refineries, including the Najaf and Kirkuk refineries, in addition to three refineries in Kurdistan.
