A political source revealed on Wednesday that the Sunni political council has named three candidates to compete for the position of Speaker of Parliament, in the event of a deadlock between the head of the Progress Party, Mohammed al-Halbousi, and the head of the Azm Alliance, Muthanna al-Samarrai.
The source told Al-Maalomah News Agency that “the intense competition between Al-Halbousi and Al-Samarrai prompted both sides to nominate replacements for the position of Speaker of Parliament, indicating that Al-Halbousi faces objections from Kurdish, Sunni, and Shiite parties who oppose supporting his continued tenure in office.”
He added that “the head of the Progress Party, Muhammad al-Halbousi, named MP Muhammad Tamim as his replacement, while the head of the Azm Alliance, Muthanna al-Samarrai, nominated MP Mahmoud al-Qaisi, and MP Salem al-Issawi was included among the candidates of the Azm and Progress alliances by the Sunni Political Council.”
The source explained that “if no agreement is reached between al-Samarrai and al-Halbousi, the three names will be put forward to compete for the position of Speaker of Parliament within the House of Representatives.”
