Shafaq News/ A delegation from the US Congress stressed, today, Sunday, to the President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, the importance of the alliance and partnership between Iraq, including Kurdistan, with the United States in the region.
The Presidency of the Region stated in a statement today that President Nechirvan Barzani met on the third day of the Munich Security Conference, with a delegation of members of Congress headed by Congressman Michael Turner.
The statement added that the meeting discussed US relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, the situation in Iraq and the internal situation in the Kurdistan Region, relations between Erbil and Baghdad and the latest developments in the discussions between them to resolve differences.
According to the statement, the delegation expressed the US Congress’ continued support for Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, stressing that the United States views Iraq and the Kurdistan Region as an important ally and partner in the region.
For his part, President Nechirvan Barzani expressed his thanks to the US Congress for its continued support for Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. During the meeting, terrorist threats to the region and other issues of common interest were also discussed.
In addition, Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region, met before noon on Saturday at the Munich Security Conference in Germany, with Celeste Wallender, US Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, and discussed with her the security dangers and threats in Iraq and the complex situations in the Middle East region.
A second statement issued by the Presidency of the Region stated that the two sides agreed in the opinion that the safety and security and political stability of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region are important for the region, and while the further aggravation of the repercussions of the war in Gaza poses a threat and danger to the region, Iraq must make every effort to avoid sliding and getting involved in problems and It places its weight on confronting terrorism and the threats and danger of ISIS.
The statement noted that in another axis of the meeting, the effects and negative impacts of targeting and attacking international coalition forces in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region were discussed. In this regard, the need to put an end to those actions that threaten the security, stability and sovereignty of the country was stressed.
Joint security cooperation between America and Iraq, within the framework of the strategic agreement between the two sides, formed another focus of the meeting, according to the statement.
